There have been some studies carried out recently that indicate that though there are numerous UK Government Schemes, that are driving energy management from the Board Room and nearly 60% of the UK’s Company Directors are committed to saving energy (all Utilities). Which should make complete sense as it is a significant cost to their business. However, what about the remaining 40% of the UK Directors?

It does not matter how big your utility consumption is however you should have a plan within your organisation to address reducing consumption, reducing costs and saving this planet.

Below is an ‘Twelve’ Step Plan that shows Directors how they can drive utility management into their business and reduce consumption, reduce costs and save this planet.

Why not follow this? Your utility cost is possibly your third largest expense after property and staff:

12 Steps for Directors

  1. Develop a business case for Utility Management and reporting your Carbon Footprint (Maybe follow the Scheme of SECR).
  2. Implement a comprehensive strategy to manage the risks and opportunities of utility management from a short- and long-term basis.
  3. Review possibilities of extending this strategy to your ‘Supply Chain’ and partner them to address the issues.
  4. Make Utility Management part of the Board Meeting Agenda.
  5. Set clear and concise targets and publish the goals.
  6. Consider partnering with others, speak to technology suppliers and customers
  7. Engage with an Energy Expert who can walk you through this process.
  8. Set up Daily monitoring systems and capture good data daily.
  9. Develop the climate change strategy as a key competitive advantage
  10. Set ambitious targets, hold people accountable, and incentivise success
  11. Promote your successes internally and external.
  12. Write a Policy for both Energy and the Environment that can be presented on the Web
