Goal Setting for ‘Energy Experts’
Does goal setting really work? I certainly don’t want to be the person to say “I told you so”, because goal setting does work whether you believe in this or not. I’m going to share with you the 2020 goals that I set and had planned for 2020 (prior to Covid 19 as this wasn’t even dreamt of when I was putting this together). Before I start, I’m not discussing fluffy stuff or hippy thoughts, I’m simply telling you what has happened to me and how it always tends to happen to me every time I set goals for my business and my personal life.
If we don’t set goals or create dreams where would we be? Ask that same question to Edison, to Steve Jobs or maybe some of my close friends and associates and ask where would they be now. We need ‘Goal Setting’, otherwise we will not grow.
In December 2019, I had the fortunate opportunity to spend a whole month and part of January travelling around Thailand with my amazing girlfriend soaking up the Thai culture with beautiful food as my topping! During this period I was maintaining my reading and learning and I actually said that 2020 was the year that my book would be written (it was already in many parts, but with no structure). Before leaving for home I had quite a few questions in my head regarding my business and many decisions. I also had an exciting new era ahead of me with my son joining me and finally turning it into a ‘family business’. So lots to think about.
When we weren’t travelling my girlfriend, bless her, was working hard for a large retail brand leaving me with time on my hands. I used this spare time to focus on my business and started to plan out my next two years. I found myself planning my LinkedIn video structure and my marketing plan, I also put together both business and personal goals. One thing I didn’t do was to limit myself. My personal goals included reading more, writing more, exercising more and obviously eating less. On reflection not bad, but could have been better, but my business goals were developing B2B Energy into more of an independent consultancy within year 1, with year 2 focusing mainly on my training and sharing my knowledge across the world.
My overall goal was to have Energy Experts around the world holding hands and collaborating with each other, reaching out to save energy, reducing carbon emissions and saving our planet. This is quite a goal and quite a journey for someone on their own, however, with my office which was really shared with me regarding LinkedIn and my coach ‘Vernini’, very quickly the world began to shrink. I embraced Zoom and MS Teams and I couldn’t believe how fast all this started to move. I am a Director Consultant with BNI and we all just stepped back and watched the world start to network.
My goals for bringing “energy experts together holding hands” is actually quite remarkable. According to Leonardo da Vinci, your arm span equals your height. Based on this you would need quite a few Energy Experts, so my mission is long, but nobody said that this mission was going to be easy. My close friends and family will know that I never give up on my dreams and if we just have one energy expert in each country that would be a massive step in the right direction. When you google this, it says there are 195 countries in the world. That’s my goal appearing for 2021…. to engage with 195 independent country based ‘Energy Experts’ . I call these experts ‘Ambassadors’.
My goal setting for 2020 regarding my business did actually pivot slightly and with goal setting for two years it may have initially looked slightly different. I’m sure you’re keen to understand what my personal goals were and how they actually turned out.
One of my biggest business goals this year was the publishing of my Book, “ Becoming an energy expert” which was published in November and can now be purchased on Amazon. My aim was to finish this and have it published in 2020 but without having the initial goal to work towards I don’t feel I would have been as successful in the completion of it.
My personal goals were to share my knowledge around the world and to actually travel the world providing knowledge to the next generation and inspiring people to join and make a difference within our industry. Amazingly this has already happened. I have presented in India, The Philippines and in Kenya. Next year I am hoping to jump on some workshops in Canada so my goal is moving in the right direction, admittedly virtually. It is my desire to attend these countries and lecture in person. I’m also planning to live my life 50/50 between Thailand and the UK and our land has already been bought.
This year I have met some amazing people, people from all over the world which I have started to document on my Podcast ‘Energy Speaks Back’. It has been an amazing journey and I give my thanks and gratitude to everyone who I have met and have engaged with. I have an amazing team around me with B2B Energy and I’m sure our goals will be met.
Over the coming days leading into 2021, reflect on your last 12 months and build yourself goals and objectives for 2021. Watch them flourish and remember that these goals will and can evolve to greater things, find a medium that works for you to document the goals.
Happy New Year to everyone who reads this.
That leaves me with one more thing to say “Be Safe”.
